I used to love buying Madness singles, very much a part of my youth.
It's a shame that they don't continue to release them a little more regularly.
As the number 1 singles band of a generation it's sad they don't see it as a priority.
I am aware that there has been the odd release but generally with rather sub-standard art work.
If no one else was doing it I'd be quite relaxed but as an instance Paul Weller releases some cracking vinyl and very regularly.
I'm not into downloads much either, how do others feel?
Just thinking about My Girl 2. With no physical release cd or vinyl and my personal dislike of downloads is it any wonder it failed to chart.
Had it been put out on red vinyl with a picture bag similar to the artwork used in the album booklet with a nice shiny new b-side I'd have bought a bunch of them!
Even a £5 I'd have been up for it.
What do people think?

I agree. Most of us here probably grew up waiting for the next single to come out,and would probably still buy them now.So I think Madness and Cooking Vinyl should definately release the next single on a physical format.

Ah, the end of the physical format does seem to be a very real threat. It certainly looks that way to fans who grew up with vinyl, then tapes and even c.d's for newer music fans. I felt the same regarding the release of 'My Girl 2'. I really wanted an actual c.d. release and not a download, but that just seems to be the most viable avenue, for not only Madness, but a lot of bands. I remember during The Dangermen releases I hunted high and low for a copy of the second single from the album, 'Girl', and couldn't find it anywhere. Eventually I found out that it wasn't released at all except for a few promos. Then there was the 'Sorry' and 'NW5' releases which were maybe not to everyone's tastes, but it kept Madness in the eye of the general record buying public. It's fair to say that Madness aren't the same band now that they were in the 80s. Back then Madness (and just about every other chart band) sold stacks of records, but although it's a different age now, I wouldn't be so doom and gloom about it. Music sales are experiencing something far greater than they've ever had to experience before. I can still recall the arguments and panic when tapes started to replace vinyl to a degree. Record sleeves carried warnings proclaiming that 'Home taping is killing music!', but music still survived. Likewise when c.d's hit the market the music buying public were more or less forced into either buying these new fangled shiny discs or not having the chance at all to own music by their favourite artists. This is the biggest shift in modern music consumerism that most of us will ever witness and I feel that there's something just around the corner which will bring balance to the whole music sales/format business. We're just experiencing a wee change in weather... As for Madness and singles. I'm not really fussed if they don't release singles at all and only release albums. If that's what it takes in this modern age, then I'm happy to go along with it, even if it's just to hear my favourite artists. I recall Chrissy Boy saying something (round about the release of 'Wonderful') that 'Madness were just going to continue releasing albums and no singles...like Zeppelin and the Floyd man!' Or words to that effect... Either way, I'm just happy that Madness are continuing to record and release music no matter what format they choose. Sunnyside, The Dug

I agree that we have to move Avec Le temps but I like vinyl.
Another thing chaps, if we are gonna make the forum work we must support all comments and respond to encourage love for it rather than diggin our old mates and ignoring the newcomers, not me I'm cool but you get the drift. Lets not behave like middle aged prissiness cos that is a slow death. If a new name appears let's give it some welly.

Hey Simon, Nice to meet on these boards and you're doing a smashing job of posting. Great to see that this forum seems to be gradually taking off (with a big thanks to Jim for putting it together.) May I add that I don't think there's any 'digging our old mates', but more of a mannerly 'nice to be reacquainted with some old pals who I used to be in regular contact with.' I'm not sure what, if any, boards you used to frequent, but for me personally it's great to be back in touch with some folk that I've not heard from in 2 or more years.......as well as all Madness fans, whoever they may be! ScabbyDug - My Girl was released on physical CD single. Bought mine in HMV for some rip off price.
It is a shame Madness didn't release My Girl2 on vinyl or a physical CD with extra tracks but they don't have the backing or a major label so it would probably be fairly costly and may not reap much reward for them financially. Also, it would have had zero impact on it's chart position. I really don't see Madness troubling the top 200 again with a new single tbh, no matter how many formats are released.
Madness fans don't seem to be in to collecting them on a mass scale. You just have to look at the 10" vinyls released a few years ago for the 1st 3 albums. 1000 pressed each and they still haven't sold out and it turns out didn't sell well enough for them to continue with the series of vinyl reissues.
