The Album is up to number 16 in the official album chart
Never knew your name didnt make the top 40 in the official singles chart. it did make 88 in the top 100
but the single made it to 7 in the independent chart.

The album re-charting at no.16 is brilliant even if it is just for one week. It's tough for older bands to keep momentum going in the charts due to limited airplay so the fact that some have latched on to Never Knew Your Name is great. Let's hope Misery has a similar effect when/if it gets released to radio. No.88 isn't bad for the single either. I see Complete is back at no.90 for Madness too so not a bad week for the band.

Let's be realistic - the single was never gonna make top 40 but did well to get to 88. It was always a better bet that the single was going to reignite the album which it has.
Maybe 3 years ago when Dust Devil got to 64 with different chart rules - that was the time for Never Knew Your Name!
Any subsequent single will not make the impact that NNYN has had - it was a nice thought but it just aint gonna happen. If we can only squeeze top 100 with loads of airplay then there is not a more obvious mainstream single from Oui Oui that will get anywhere near that.

I love Madness and everything they do. I like this record, but why would I buy it...i have it on the album. Its no different. If it had been a physical single release with a b side/rarity or something I would jump at it, but am not paying to download something I already have.. I would suggest there are many fans who have done similar..
Hope if misery gets released, it gets on the radio playlisy and is available as a single with something new/different otherwise just no point paying. That said, i suppose it has a massive push for the album again

We seem almost disappointed but let us not be delusional - there are no other possible singles that can do anything at all compared to this one.
I don't understand this push for Misery - it is a knees up song with trite lyrics - no chance of getting in top 200
Let us just accept that even with this big airplay - in Madness terms 2013 - top 40 was miles away.
It was a nice thought but if it aint gonan happen let us not be so desperate as to try and make it happen as we did midweek - I thought that was a bit embarrassing and unnatural to try and manufacture a hit.
If we cant sell 7,000 copies so be it. It is not 1981 anymore. As I said, if it was, NNYN would have been top 10. But it is not.
It is 2013.

The Lyrics for Misery are not trite. They reveal the key to living a happy life. Seriously. If i'd have been aware of what Misery and "How can I Tell You" preach, then maybe my life may not have been such a bloody mess for so long!

As any release is on Madness's own label, maybe the costs of issuing a physical copy are too much compared to how many they would sell so it just isn't financially worth it anyway?
Madness don't have a massive fan base of people that would be that interested in buying a physical copy I doubt to make much difference to the charts. Those 10" vinyl albums that were pressed of 1000 copies each never sold out and didn't sell well enough for them to continue with the series for the rest of the reissued albums.
Initially, I wasn't mad on Misery but having heard it play live and the response it got plus the fact that Simon Mayo and radio 2 would plug it to death, it is definitely worth it being the next single. As others have said, with downloading, things have changed that I don't think any of us expect Madness to break the top 40 singles chart again. Personally, it doesn't bother me much anymore. As long as their albums do well really.

I just think if they are going to issue singles as downloads, they could at least make it a slightly different mix. As has been said here, most fans won't pay out for the same thing again, despite band loyalty and the cheap price of downloads.
Back in the day a lot of the 7" versions were slightly different mixes from the albums. At least an alternative mix would offer something to fans who already own the album.

I think if they were hoping it was going to chart they should have made it a proper single by adding a few mixes or b-sides to the download package to make it worthwhile. They must know that 99% of their fans are not going to download their singles if it's identical to the album version. In someways, it's quite impressive to think that the majority of people who may have downloaded the single over the last few weeks are new Madness fans who don't have Oui Oui yet. Would be great if they did issue the single on a physical format in future though. Even at a slightly inflated price that a lot of physical singles are now (£5-7), I would still buy it.

I don't think the album will go much higher but hopefully it spend another week in the top 40.
Madness are appearing this Saturday on Britain's Brightest so the Never Knew Your Name clip we heard about filmed in Trafalgar Square will finally be shown.
