Has anyone listened to the first 40 seconds? Do you really think that is single material!!!!
The fact that it bursts into life afterwards does not make it a single.
It always makes me laugh that Liberty was labelled as the album with no obvious singles - Oui Oui has no singles on it at all!
Never Knew Your name - the other bookies fave I guess - has an equally limp beginning and dire lyrics.

i think you are being a bit harsh on the album. There is at least 3 singles for me how can i tell you is definite one, as is misery and never knew your name. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but in all honesty with the way the music scene is and the lack of radio airplay madness`s recent stuff gets any single would probably flop imho its the way the music scene is now.

I think there are a few absolute classic tracks on this record.
I love it and have played it constantly since its release.
How can I tell you is a pop nugget, it's utterly bloody fantastic.
Misery is also class.
As for Leon, it has everything, it's wicked.
Circus freaks has a wonderful melody, typically complex and intriguing lyrics but the production is a bit shit sadly.
So Alive is erring towards cheese but personally I love it.
Death of a rude boy is about the darkest thing they've ever written but its majestic.
All single material.
Gumption I simply can't agree with your assessment of how can I tell you. It's insanely catchy with lovely lyrics. A wonderous track.
I haven't mentioned never knew your name, a great tune but lyrics you can't really get inspired by, deffo an album track.

Personally, I think How Can I Tell You is perfect single material and I reckon it would likely shift more copies of the album if given enough airplay.
Incidentally, a few weeks ago this particular track was played on the BBC Radio 6 programme 'Roundtable'. It received a thumbs up from both the guests in the studio and in the online chat room.

interesting but - irrespective of chart success ( let us admit no Madness single will touch top 200 now ) - when a "neutral" listener hears How Can I Tell You they will not be hooked by the start.
It is like reading a book or hearing a presentation - it is only because we are Madness fans that we are more forgiving. Cmon admit it!!!!
How Can I Tell You does not have the intro of a single. It will lose most listeners in the first 20 seconds...
I think Liberty had far more confident single material - That Close, On The Town, Idiot Child....all delivered with a fantastic confident Madness flourish
This album just seems so weak - who is going to admit it? Cmon!!!!

Gumption, does it really matter so much to you whether others agree with your opinion or not? You don't care much for the album. Fair enough, that's a valid opinion. Just like everyone else's.

I can only tell you how I feel.
Why on earth would I lie, I'm on here for fun and to talk Madness.
Shame I wasn't on a forum when Sorry was released or the dangermen album or Wonderful (another cd where good tracks were culled) or announcing a gallery of shit support bands as in their own way they all pissed me off.
I've tried really hard to be pissed off at this one, shit name, shit artwork - but I really like it.
I prefer it to LONF. That record was declared in the media as a masterpiece - quite difficult to criticise when everyone was raving about it but I know which one makes me want to play it more.
As Madness fans who would have broken rank and been honest then when at last they were receiving some well deserved praise and industry recognition?
That said I supported it in every way, cd, album, box set and singles.
Look at the reviews, they are largely positive for Oui oui etc, are they all lying too?
One or two don't like it, that's Madness, dividing opinion.
Madness have always delighted and frustrated in equal measure. They've delighted me and frustrated you this time around. Crank up the volume and get a load of Leon, it's epic!

No it does not - I dont whant to tell people what to think - just looking for some stark honesty as most people have a problem with more than a few of the tracks and yet are still giving the album very favourable reviews which does not make sense.
However i guess we ought to accentaute positive from now...

Absolutely right re concentrating on the positive, its good though that we all think different. On Norton, its got some great tracks, but I for one never understood why it was critically aclaimed (chuffed to bits that it was!!) Give me tracks like one better day, march of the gherkins, prospects any day and they still blow me away... Still loving oui oui, but in my opinion, its got faults, but so have nearly all albums.....i DO think how can i tell you could be a single, think Misey would also get some good radio play, cause its so instant....could cheer the country up in winter etc.. Jim Simon--loving Leon, the more I play it...
Hope cd's dont wear out cause its still on constant (skipping my girl and rude boy!!)

the only 2 tracks that i`m not keen on is Powder Blue imho should have been a b-side and my girl 2 the 2nd version which i felt the latter shouldnt have been on the album.
Apart from that the album is a good album. I have stated somewhere else on here I rate it better than Mad not Mad and its up there with one step beyond, absolutely and norton folgate.

I think that How Can I Tell You is a really great pop song, one of my favourite tracks on the album.. definetly single material imo. I also think it will be a great song on the tour,. played live. I,m really pleased with the new album, Liberty was always going to be a hard act to follow, but i think Madness can be pleased with the final results.. I know I Am

As for "How can I tell you" , its the very reason I love madness. It will connect with different people in different ways (as madness do). For me it reminds me of my relationship with my dad , and the relationship I have with my kids. Great song. As for the charts ....... my opinion is they are full of absolute trash and a band with the history and prowess of madness should not (and probably will not ) give a toss about them !

I do like Madness - in fact it is weird this album coming out has prompted me to play so many of their brilliant songs from past albums. At the moment, I love those two tracks from the Our House musical - Simple Equation and Sarah's Song - so fresh not at all dated.
I guess that's the thing - I am not playing Oui Oui - I know they can do miles better and after a 3 year gap between Liberty they should have done a lot better. Nobody was rushing them except themselves maybe.
Not saying that How Can I Tell You is bad - it is a grower - quite a clever intro but not an intro of a single. That is all.
