The 1st time I saw and heard Madness was in late 1979 and I was 10. I live in Holland and we used to have a popchart programme called TopPop (sort of a Dutch version of TOTP), which I watched every week religiously. And in the show they would also do a quick rundown of the UK top 10 and that's how I got to see a snippet of the One Step Beyond video. I immediately liked the song and found them extremely funny. But it didn't make run out to recordshop the next day. I kind of forgot about them for the next couple of months.
And then round the summer of 1980 more and more kids in my neighbourhood started to get into the whole 2Tone thing and Madness ofcourse was one the fave bands. But it wasn't until the release of Baggy Trousers that it really kicked off for me. I had heard BT on the radio a couple of times and thought it was really catchy. But when I saw the video for it, that was it, man! They looked so flippin cool, especially Suggs and Chas. They way they were dressed (remember we had just left the 70's and it's bell-bottom fashion), the black Crombies, buzz-cut hair-do's, the nutty movements, flying saxman with no strings. Everything looked and sounded exciting about Madness. Right there and then I swore to myself that Madness were gonna be my number one favourite band for the rest of my life. And I'm proud to say I never broke that promise. 30 odd years onwards they're still my number one band. They're kind of like your fave football club but with the same team of players for 3 decades.
